The year 2011 marked a season of new experiences and solidifying vision. To be sure, I continue to enjoy my work at First Mennonite. I love working with young people! Certainly ministry in our culture can be challenging at times. However, I love to teach God’s Word and nothing compares to the blessing of sharing God’s message and knowing that seeds of truth will eventually produce eternal fruit.
Some new experiences this year included traveling to Philadelphia with the catechism class and visiting historic Mennonite sites. It’s been great to watch this group of students grow and mature in their faith. Another first was attending the Mennonite USA conference. This experience was also both educational and fun.
This year I’ve also experienced times of deep reflection and personal challenge. I’ve been reminded of spiritual truths that continue to guide my vision for youth ministry. First, I’ve been reminded that young people need to know God’s Word. In our world of counterfeit religions, bad theology, and promises of worldly pleasure, leaders of any church must be faithful to biblically educate both young and old. Second, I’ve been reminded that I need to allow myself to be challenged out of my comfort zone. That challenge might involve sharing the faith at the local jail, traveling to Haiti, or holding an open discussion time with the youth (which can be intense, because kids will ask the hard questions!). In other words, I know I need to continue to grow in my faith and be challenged regularly to practice what I preach. Finally, I’ve been reminded that I need God’s strength and grace for literally everything I do. This means that I seek God’s guidance and listen for His voice as I consider how to direct ministry. Jesus said Himself, “Apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5b).
Consequently, the new experiences and foundational truths that characterized this year will continue to influence me in 2012. Teaching truth, embracing challenge, and walking alongside of young people are all practices that are not only a calling and vocation. These activities are what make life for me exciting and filled with joy. Thank you for your prayers. Please continue to pray that God will do His work at First Mennonite, in our local community, and throughout the world.
